Maktesh Ramon is 38 km long, 6 km wide and 450 m deep crater, surrounded on all sides by a steep edge. It was not formed by meteor impact or volcanic activity, but by geological processes. This area used to be under the ocean, and the water would slowly recede. During that retreat, water dug the ground in the central part of the crater, because it was soft. This is how this natural phenomenon called maktesh was created. Altogether there are 7 maktesh in the world. Five of them are in Israel and two in Egypt.
