A hiking trail leads from Kaloi Limenes to the Agiofarago beach
The coast of Crete is mostly steep and inaccessible.
A sea water is concealed at the very bottom of a deep pit formed by high coastal rocks just before descending to the beach. A natural underwater tunnel connects the lake to the ocean. Only skilled divers with the necessary equipment can enter the lake through an underwater tunnel because it is encircled by cliffs on all sides.
The sea is crystal blue and the beach is pebbly.
High cliffs rise above the beach.
There is a natural stone bridge near the beach, under which it is possible to swim.
At the end of the eponymous canyon, which the hiking trail winds through, is Agiofarago Beach. “Canyon of the Saints” is what Agiofarago means. Hermits used to come to the canyon to practice asceticism. This is where 300 saints are said to have resided. They were each in their own cell, separated from one another all the time.
There was no communication among hermits. They would meet in the Gumenospilos cave only once a year. Although the cave’s entrance is modest, the cave hall is roomy and brightly lit thanks to a ceiling aperture that lets in natural light.
